I love this review and it helped me jump back into the book! I had to take a break for awhile because I found it almost painfully overwhelming . . . so much information, and so much of it was validating . . . but also I was really overwhelmed by how much oppression and trauma and systematic injustices there are in the stories of masked autistic people. This creative engagement really helped me get back into Unmasking Autism, which I truly believe is an incredible resource!!!!
I read the book and really liked it...but did not do any of the exercises (which is pretty much par for the course for me and self-help books...read avidly, ignore all the "go deeper" exercises :D honestly, hearing you step through the exercises made me want to go back and invest the emotional energy. I LOVE hearing you come alive and how you're seeing yourself in new ways.
This was such a creative review! I love hearing about what brought you joy in your unmasking moments and just added the book to my library holds! I love the practical exercises and how you modeled them (teacher over here, so I appreciate that!)
Here is my reframe: I was told I was a robot with no feelings, but actually I am deep-feeling and empathetic. I value this quality in myself because: I have an inner well of passion that sustains me and I can pour out on those I trust and love, and I am highly motivated to help others and sit with them in their pain.
I've also been looking for a creativity/writing group for people with mental health issues--I signed up for your Substack and can't wait to connect over there!
This sounds so hard to get to a place to be able to do but so worthy of working toward: Try to go an entire day without guessing or anticipating anyone’s emotions.
Anyone else learn folks don’t like when you ask their emotions, but don’t like it if you guess/assume either?
I'd started Unmasking Autism but have since begun and also not finished several other books, as is my habit...but I loved this creative review! It's nice to find places where other neurodivergent people hang out, for sure. I need to get back into the book and read more about unmasking!

Love!! The review, the 5 moments and “meeting” the author behind a book that really spoke to me in a deep moment of need. (365 days of peace).

I loved seeing your 5 moments ❤️ and reframing negative things people have said is so beautiful. Going to try both of these.

I just loved this. What a fun and creative way to structure a review. Definitely going to have to check this book out. Thank you, Jessica!
So cool! Loved this. And bravo to them for writing four books since then!
